Young People United (YPU)
Young People United is a dynamic youth association that helps nurture and build the talented young people of Medway and nearby areas from ages 6 to 24.
Who We Are
Welcome to Young People United (YPU), a vibrant and dynamic sub-group of MACA dedicated to empowering and engaging the youth of Medway. Founded in 2014 by three friends—Safiya, Chris, and Holly—YPU was born out of their friendship and shared vision for creating a space that transcends differences and celebrates unity.
In 2015, the YPU community faced a profound loss with the passing of Safiya. Her legacy lives on through the annual Young Black Achievers Awards, where YPU awards are presented to honour her memory. Today, YPU is more than a group; it’s a testament to the strength of friendships and the impact young individuals can make in their community.
What We Do
YPU is committed to providing a platform for Medway’s young people to participate, engage, and grow. Our current projects reflect our dedication to creativity, education, and cultural exploration.
MACA is pleased to announce the start of its new projects sponsored by the National Lottery.
These projects will run for 3 years with a view to giving young people an opportunity to build new skills, sharpen existing skills and also develop long lasting successful careers if they so choose with a definitive educational benefit.
The first is in Music Production with our Partners in Mid Kent College to develop their own music and work on a music for film project culminating in a collaborative album for release at the end of the project with ample support for the pursuit of individual growth and development.
To compliment Music Production, we also have DJ’ing which is now in the UK school’s curriculum available for GCSE and at University. This project will work with young people from beginner, intermediate and advanced to develop their technical know how and an understanding of the promotion and marketing of their skills as a career option. We will also be supporting events for the young people to showcase their skills and develop their performance awareness whilst helping develop a strong and exciting repertoire as well.
Our third project is in film making with a project that works with young people learning to develop filming skills with a brief on “Life in Medway” through the eyes of the young film makers which will be accompanied by music made by the young people in the music focussed project. This project aims to work with young people across filming, location scouting and editing and many more to deliver a well rounded understanding of the discipline.
Dance is one of our longest running projects as an organisation and MACA continues to support the idea of supporting young people to lead. This project is now led by one of our own accomplished dancers who is trail blazing through MACA’s 40-year history as a young person who has now graduated to lead a project. This project is 2 fold, on one hand it aims to promote healthier lifestyles through movement for all ages while the dance classes are also building MACA’s first competition ready dance crew. We have the facilities to transport young people to other cities with chaperones and parents on our 17 seater bus courtesy of BBC children in need.
We are also thankful for the support from Medway council culture team and youth service who have provided in kind support for these projects
These projects are filling up fast so sign up now to secure a space in any or all projects.
