Why African & Caribbean Organ Donation Matters:

Did You Know?

Individuals from African and Caribbean backgrounds often develop conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and kidney disease, making them more prone to organ damage and the need for a transplant. Sadly, the shortage of organ donors from these communities prolongs the wait for a lifesaving transplant.

Facts & Statistics

  • 1. Under-Representation: In 2022/23, only 2% of deceased organ donors and 2% of living organ donors were from black backgrounds, while 4% of deceased organ donors and 8% of living organ donors were from Asian backgrounds.
  • 2. Over-Representation in Need: The transplant waiting list in 2022/23 saw 11% from black backgrounds and 19% from Asian backgrounds. In contrast, transplant recipients included 15% from black backgrounds and 19% from Asian backgrounds.
  • 3. Consent Challenges: Only 39% of families from ethnic minority backgrounds agreed to organ donation in 2022/23, compared to 70% from white backgrounds.
  • 4. Longer Waiting Times: Black patients faced a median waiting time of 649 days for a kidney transplant, 599 days for Asian patients, and 463 days for white patients in 2022/23.
  • 5. Better Outcomes with Ethnic Matches: Organ transplants from donors of the same ethnicity yield better outcomes for individuals from ethnic minority backgrounds, reducing the risk of rejection and complications.
